New Studies Show Brain
Is
Boosted by Glucose and Oxygen
by Amanda Onion

April 2 Got writer's block
or can't seem to work through your data? Reaching for sugar or
even an oxygen mask could help, suggests a new study by a British
neuroscientist.

Just as athletes can benefit
by eating right and doping their blood to contain more oxygenated
cells, the new findings suggest students can improve their performance
by eating glucose or breathing pure oxygen.
"We found a dose of
oxygen or glucose can improve performance on tasks that require
great mental effort," says Andrew Scholey, director of the
Human Cognitive Neuroscience unit at the University of Northumbria
in Newcastle, England.

The Oxygen Experience®
Strapped with small tubes
coming from big tanks, masses of movers and shakers are flooding
local oxygen bars, inhaling and exhaling extra doses of pure
relief.
Oxygen treatments are said
to be the newest trend, invading the states with great popularity
in Hollywood and Las Vegas. Even dating shows on television,
such as "Xtreme Dating," are featuring oxygen bars.
Numerous casinos, including The Venetian and The Tropicana, have
oxygen bars for thrill-seekers. The MGM Grand's restaurant, Olio!,
reports that about 78,000 customers a year visit their oxygen
bar.
The myths and rumors about
pure oxygen treatments are well-circulated: it can clear the
mind to study, increase endurance, boost energy and lessen the

A new breed of bar may be blowing into your community - one that
serves not alcohol but oxygen. Oxygen bars, which started overseas
and hit Nevada and California in the late 1990s, are spreading
across the country. You can find them in spas, malls, casinos
and tanning salons, among other places, offering scented oxygen
that they claim can do everything from relieve headaches to boost
the immune system.
